Reviewing the Pros and Cons of Bamboo as a Green Construction Material!

A 1004401

When we think of construction materials, we don’t necessarily think of green alternatives. However, the recent focus on environmental impact has forced people to consider options, such as bamboo. Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants, and in recent years, companies like Bamboo Architecture Construction have used it effectively to create amazing design plans, eco-friendly homes and offices. Of course, there is a need to look at it with a more practical approach. In this post, we take a look at bamboo and its pros and cons as a green construction material.

The pros

  • First and foremost, as we mentioned, bamboo is extremely fast growing. Depending on the variety, a new harvest is ready in a very short time. Expectedly, this makes bamboo a better choice than wood and much more sustainable, as well.
  • Contrary to what many may believe, bamboo is incredibly strong, despite being a grass and not timber. This is the precise reason why bamboo is often considered as a better choice for areas that are prone to earthquakes. Some varieties like Guadua are known to be stronger than many varieties of wood.

  • Installation is easy. Compared to wood, bamboo doesn’t require any specific installation methods. It can be easily blended with most other construction materials, and it is effective for both design, aesthetics, and flooring needs.
  • There is also no denying that bamboo is sustainable. It is also one of the most affordable choices, especially if you compare the costs to that of expensive and exotic. It has been used effectively for a number of sustainable projects.

On the flip side

Much like some of the other green materials, bamboo is prone to damage by other environmental factors such as rain and fire. Many construction companies have, however, come up with ways to make bamboo more effective in those departments, and these finishes are also green, which means treating bamboo doesn’t have to affect the environment in a bad way. It is also often argued that bamboo doesn’t grow everywhere, so while it is cheap, shipping costs can be high.

With all that said, there is still no getting away from the fact that bamboo is a green choice, and it might be one of the only choices, given that deforestation is at its peak. When we look for more options, bamboo might fit the bill for the right reasons. Check online to find construction companies that deal in bamboo architecture.
